Atmospheric consistometers are used to determine the time of onset of thickening of low temperature cement systems at atmospheric pressure, rheological properties of the mortar, water release (free water content), filtration loss (water yield), viscosity, rheological parameters and several other parameters. However, the main application of atmospheric consististometers is conditioning of mortars prior to rheology and water release tests.
The consistency of cement mortars is measured in units of Berdens (Vs). Uniformity of heating is achieved through the use of a circulation bath.
